In Cambodia, the temples of Angkor are not places of worship but the residence of the gods on earth. According to the texts, the gods live on the top of a mythical mountain, Mount Meru, considered as world’s axis. The sanctuary which houses the image of the principal god reproduces this cosmic vision on a human scale.
The symbolic concepts established by the ancient treaties of India served as a framework for the Khmer builders to build state temples and sanctuaries dedicated to the ancestors of the sovereigns.
