Inspired by “the aini” (traditional collective work) the Cooperative ”Los Andes” was created in the Peruvian Andes in 2001. The Cooperative was born in the village of Cotarusi. Before the Cooperative started, farmers were never able to get any loans at all. The Cooperative started off with 100 members and has by today increased their membership by 60,000.

In 2013, the Cooperative organized the celebration of Señor de animas, in Chalhuanca. The Cooperative managed to combine cooperation, festivity and tradition in one of the most visited and spectacular festivals in the recent years in Peru. There is a new way of economic development, the response of poor people to the economic world crisis.

In the Peruvian Andes all productive activities are feasts, while the Western culture separates work from feast. In these communities people still have feasts when they plant, harvest, etc. The Andean people develop a series of activities for their livelihood in harmony with their nature and culture.
